Local organizations sponsoring major events that are open to the public are invited to submit calendar items and photos. We also encourage local organizations to use this calendar to schedule their events and avoid conflicts with other events. Please contact us by email. This calendar is administered by the Vista Chamber of Commerce and is endorsed by the City of Vista as the official Community Calendar. Events, times and locations are subject to change; we recommend that you contact the organizers to confirm details.

June 14 - July 6 - San Diego County Fair will run from Saturday, June 14 through Sunday, July 6. The Fair will be closed two Mondays, June 16 and 23. The "Summer of Sports" theme will celebrate a wide variety of sports at all levels, from youth to professional. Details.

June 19, 20, 21, & 22 Headstrong fairies, treacherous pirates, ticking crocodiles and the high adventure of Neverland all descend on the Moonlight Amphitheater this summer as Encore Youth Theater and Premiere for Kids present the opening production – PETER PAN in Moonlight’s 26th season. J. M. Barrie’s enduring tale of the boy who never grows up has captured the imaginations of children and adults for over a hundred years and this summer he flies into Vista with a cast of  98 children under the Direction of one of San Diego’s most recognizable Director’s, Randall Hickman. Hickman concludes, “Peter Pan is filled with colorful costumes, a huge Pirate ship and tree house built right to the Moonlight’s proscenium walls, dramatic fight scenes, and of course – The flying of Peter, Wendy, Michael and John.  We have hired ZFX, the premiere flying company in the United States.  What they have our kids doing in the air is amazing.” The gates open at 6:30 p.m.  Bring the family and some food and dine right on the lawn before the show starts. June 20 (Friday) The Village Idiots Literary Society presents their monthly literature reading, at Vista Village Art Gallery, 204 Main Street beginning at 7 p.m. This month there will be no featured reader but plenty of open mike time for all to share their writing.  There will be snacks served and loads of time to meet and greet.  Admission is free.

June 21 (Saturday) The Vista Historical Society will hold their 2008 Annual Meeting and luncheon in the newly renovated Derby Room of the Vista Entertainment Center, 435 W Vista Way at noon.  The luncheon menu includes a choice of vegetarian lasagna with white sauce, Cobb salad or beef brisket, a beverage and dessert are included. The agenda for the meeting includes a report on the Vista Historical Society, the election of board of directors, two Vista Hall of Fame members, Morris Vance and Linden Burzell, will be inducted and Col. Dick Rotwell, USMC Ret., president of Camp Pendleton’s Historical Society will speak about the newly formed Society.  The cost is $20 per person and RSVP is required.  For further information contact the museum at (760) 630-0444.

June 21 & 22, 28 & 29 (Saturday & Sunday) – Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum presents the Spring Antique Engine & Tractor Show at 2040 N. Santa Fe Ave. in Vista.  The celebration will include working antique equipment demos, tractor games, wagon rides weaving demonstrations and sales, blacksmiths & wheelwrights, quilt show & raffle, and food & snacks.  For more information visit www.agsem.com or call (800) 587-2286.

June 21 (Saturday) Colors of the Night, Noche de Colores, hosted by Ballet Folklorico Tierra Caliente under the Direction of Jose Jaimes, promises to be a fund-raising event like no other. Please join us for an evening filled with vibrant colors and music as we honor Mexican tradition through art and dance to benefit the Vista Townsite Community Partnership (VTCP). Portraying the fast “zapateados” of Vera Cruz; the beat of the drums in Yucatan; dancing the rhythm of Guerrero; the Jarabe Mixteco from Oaxaca; the Western style of Nuevo Leon and celebrating the evening by closing with the traditional “Jarabe Tapatio” (Mexican Hat Dance) with its’ “Chinas Poblanas”. Come listen to the extraordinary “ranchero” voice of Alegria del Valle accompanied by Hugo Montoya; two great artists promoting traditional Mexican music. To keep you on the edge of your seat, we proudly present the talented and well-known Tony Munoz with “floreo de reata” (trick roping). June 23 (Monday) - Installation Luncheon for the Vista Chamber of Commerce and the Vista Village Business Association at Vista Valley Country Club, 11:30 social and registration, 12 noon luncheon. New board members will be installed, and awards will be presented to outstanding businesses and committee members. Reservation deadline is June 19; no at-the-door tickets. 760-726-1122.

June 26 (Thursday) Moonlight Cultural Foundation presents The San Diego Symphony with special guest Frank Sinatra Jr. with a 7:30 p.m. curtain at the Moonlight Amphitheatre, gates open at 6 p.m.  Admission is free as a gift to the Community. June 26 (Thursday) Soroptimist International of Vista will host a meeting to establish a North County Anti-Human Trafficking Coalition, for 10-12 at the Townsite Community Center. RSVP is required by June 19 to (760) 630-7839.

June 28-29 (Saturday & Sunday) - 35th Annual San Diego Scottish Highland Games & Gathering of the Clans will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a free concert on the night of June 27 at 7 pm, at the Moonlight Amphitheater in Brengle Terrace Park in Vista.  For more information visit their website at www.sdhighlandgames.org or call (760) 726-3591.

June 30 (Monday) – Moonlight Cultural Foundation, co-producing with the San Diego Shakespeare Society, closes their free play reading series with Jonathan McMurtry’s Shakespeare and Friends, directed by Alex Sandie at 7:30 p.m. at the Avo Playhouse.  This production stars Vista resident Jonathan McMurtry, an Old Globe resident artist and nationally recognized award-winning actor.  McMurtry’s most recent acknowledgements include: The San Diego Critics’ Circle - Craig Noel Award for Body of Work, and the Patté - Shiley Award for Lifetime Achievement. Moonlight Cultural Foundation’s free WordsWork Play Reading Series are held select Monday evenings at the Avo Playhouse, 303 Main Street. Open seating. July 4 (Friday) A fundraising gourmet BBQ, catered by Hennessey’s, will precede the City of Vista’s Fourth of July fireworks display in Brengle Terrace Park, 1200 Vale Terrace Drive. Dinner includes: reserved parking adjacent to the amphitheatre; a gourmet barbecue tri-tip/chicken breast dinner with beverages; and premium reserved seating in the Moonlight Amphitheatre for San Diego County’s largest aerial fireworks display scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Dinner is $65 per person or $500 for a table of eight. Dinner seating begins at 5:30 p.m. with service from 6-7:30 p.m. Reservations are required for dinner.  Call (760) 726-1340 ext. 1571 to make reservations. The park opens at 7 a.m. with a day of family-friendly activities is scheduled with food and beverage booths, picnicking and a static display of vintage military equipment.  Guests can enjoy live musical entertainment at the Moonlight Amphitheatre from 3:15 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., featuring Rising Star. The community is asked to be sure household pets are secured safely during the fireworks display. July 5 & 6 (Saturday & Sunday) – The Antique Gas and Steam Museum will host a two-day Civil War Reenactment from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.  The 40-acre museum is located at 2040 N. Santa Fe Ave. in Vista.  For more information visit their website at www.agsem.com or call (800) 587-2286.

July 10 (Friday) Tri-City Medical Center will host the 1st Annual Mid-Summer’s Health and Wellness Fair on the Medical Center campus located at 4002 Vista Way, Oceanside.  It will take place in the Northwest Parking lot from 4 – 7 p.m. Tri-City professionals will provide free health screenings, information about disease prevention and explain how to access services offered by the hospital, including the new Health and Wellness Complex scheduled to open November 2008.  The fair will also feature a technology tour, entertainment, food, drinks and guest appearances by sports celebrities.

July 11 (Friday) - The Vista Chamber of Commerce will combine with members of the San Marcos and Oceanside Chambers of Commerce at 7:30 a.m. for a special presentation, "Reminders for Success in a Down Economy" by Dave Kilby, an executive vice president of the California Chamber. This event will be held at the Krikorian Theatres, located at 25 Main Street. Call the Chamber at 760-726-1122 to register.

July 26 (Saturday) Moonlight Cultural Foundation & Vista Optimist Club present the Annual Wine & Food Fest, from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., at the beautiful Optimist Clubhouse. Come and enjoy food & wine tasting, a silent auction & live auction and entertainment! Aug. 3 (Sunday) - Rod Run showcases Custom Cars, Hot Rods and car-related vendors. Presented by the Vista Village Business Association on Main Street in downtown Vista. Live entertainment and opportunity drawings will also be featured. Application will be available at www.VistaRodRun.com. The sponsoring VVBA is looking for corporate sponsors and items to put in goodie bags for all entrants, such as pens, keychains, notepads, brochures, specials, discount coupons. August 25 (Tuesday) Amigos de Vista Lions Club will host its 33rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament at the Castle Creek Country Club in Escondido. Sept. 27-28 (Sat.-Sun.) - Viking Festival 2008, 2006 East Vista Way, sponsored by the Norway Hall Foundation, Norwegian Fish Club Odin, and Sons of Norway Lodge No. 60. The Highland Way will be performing their upbeat Celtic and Irish Music. There will be: battle exhibitions, log-toss competition, battle cry competition, axe throwing competition, Viking encampments. Oct. 22 (Wednesday) Business Expo & Taste of Vista, sponsored by the Vista Chamber of Commerce, location to be announced, 3 to 7 p.m. Vista's business expo is the largest in North County with 140 exhibitors and 1,200 attendees last year. October 25 (Saturday) - Vista Unified School District Festival of the Arts - numerous schools make presentations of visual and performing arts for the festival. Last year, over 1000 students performed in the festival, and visual art pieces from Kindergarten through 12th grade lined the Vista Village sidewalks. GREATER VISTA FIRE SAFE COUNCIL meets on the third Monday of every month at the Vista Public Library, 700 Eucalyptus Ave., from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. The Council's mission is "To mobilize the community to preserve, educate and protect lives, property and the environment from multi-hazard incidents." The Fire Safe Council can be used as a forum to share information, solve problems and link related programs to save money and time. The public safety issues the council discusses may extend beyond fire safety to earthquake preparedness, emergency medical response.
